Yoav Alkalay is a Partner and Patent Attorney in the Patents Group at Pearl Cohen’s Tel Aviv office. For more than 15 years Yoav has been advising clients on various Intellectual Property matters, such as strategic patent portfolio development and management, patents monetization, IP due diligence for M&A deals, and more. Yoav holds LLB and LLM degrees from the faculty of law of the Haifa University and a BSc degree in computer science, also from the Haifa University.
Prior to joining Pearl Cohen, Yoav was in few senior in-house positions in Israel and in the US. Yoav was the Head of IP at Amdocs for 5 years, and before that, Yoav was with the IP Law department of IBM for 9 years in Israel and in the US. Yoav started his career at EPLC.
Yoav’s approach to IP is business-centric, with the goal of maximizing the monetary value of IP portfolios through strategically developing IP assets – a goal that can be applied to a company of any size with intellectual property.
As the Head of IP at Amdocs Yoav was responsible for Amdocs’s patent and trademark strategies, planning IP programmes, addressing global portfolio considerations, leading IP due diligence projects for M&A deals, handling open source and IP contractual matters, providing the required support to ongoing patent litigation cases, and developing internal procedures to foster innovation. Under Yoav’s leadership, Amdocs has been listed among the top 1000 US assignees for the past three years, and won a post-Alice favorable decision with the Federal Circuit on patent-eligibility (one of the first post-Alice favorable decisions to owners of Software implemented patents). In IBM, Yoav was one of few IP attorneys supporting the IBM IP Licensing business unit, and in this capacity, Yoav drafted and negotiated patent license agreements such as cross license agreements, sliver licenses, springing licenses and more, as well as patent divestiture and assignment agreements.
Yoav is also experienced in additional areas related to IP. For example, managing the intersection of antitrust, HR and intellectual property; negotiating deals involving intellectual property with public and private companies; advising legal and engineering groups on global IP policies; implementing open-source licenses and inter-company policies; supervising large IP portfolios; overseeing litigation for IP-related actions; and facilitating patent harvesting, patent development and patent mining workshops.
Yoav was listed in 2017 and in 2018 in the IAM300, Top 300 IP Strategists list issued by the IAM magazine.
